You choose to define yourself in a very particular way, bringing the concept of design near to…garbage. What is the Trash Design?

I wanted to associate the words “trash” and “design” in a provocative way during an event projected for Vifra at The “Fuorisalone del Mobile” in Milan. This event had an international flavor and scenery that wore the contents and the products displayed was very important. The gambling language in this case was an integral part of the scenery. Stated that it’s important to understand that the planning about my creative consultancy are basically aimed at materials that accumulate in the warehouses of the companies; stocks of various kinds that have to be disposed of with costs, often high… the “trash”. My contribution, which I define sustainable creativity, aims to prevent the disposal and to give new life to materials for re-placing them on the market with a new and higher ethical-economic value… design.

Art, but also sustainability. You have shown that it’s possible to change what is considered a waste in a jewel: how do you do that, and most importantly, why?

I don’t presume to make art, but surely my life style, my creative thinking and approach to each individual project embrace the concept of sustainability. The “jewels” created using Vifra’s plastic waste were produced to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the Futurist movement. Art, Architecture and Fashion have been run over by this movement, there was a break with the past and, at the same time, a great energy to meet and build the future. I simply wondered about today’s futuristic, and the answer was equally simple: futuristic is to protect the environment in which we live, minimize waste, take advantage of the creativity to re-use what the “factory”, so beloved by the Futurists, now produces as a waste product. Thus, the plastic geometry of elements have inspired me, like they were precious and semiprecious stones. From this feeling came the idea to create necklaces and pendants to wear. Modern objects whose the intrinsic value is emphasized by the person wearing them, because that person has understood and embraced the spirit of the project.

What features make the plastic suitable for the purpose to create jewelry?

In experience related to my collaboration with Vifra, the plastic materials employed come from cosmetics, perfumery and taps area. This type of plastic is suitable for the composition of a “jewel” because it has simple shapes, variable sizes and especially because it is already drilled. This latter aspect is crucial for the assembly of objects, because I could use the individual pieces as “pure”, just as the machine released them without having to take action with other tools or adhesives. The rings, cones, squares, small parts are molded in my hands and jointed with tied textile elements. The stiffness of the plastic and the brilliance of chrome are muffl ed by the silk, cotton and wool fabrics. The happy mix of fashion design, futuristic aspiration and the environmental theme give rise to extravagant items, but refi ned, with sustainable creativity that, as already mentioned, is the engine of the entire project and more generally of my career as a craftsman designer.
